Introducing the “Umunne m” series

Life, in its curious way, has made me a narrator — a teller of mesmerizing stories, both real and imagined. I find myself drawn to stories that captivate and transport one into a fictional world, weaving worlds with ink and voice.

This is one of those stories where I believe people who are born and raised by the same parents can turn out differently because they do not experience the same parental upbringing. Therefore, I’m inclined to tell their stories at once, but you might get lost in the maze, so I have chosen to tell their stories in sequence.

It is often a marvel how we, who shared a home, a table, and sometimes a womb, could turn out so differently. The world often expects sameness, a shared rhythm, but from childhood to adulthood, our distinct personalities shine through, molding our lives in ways both beautiful and flawed.

An African would call his tribesman his brother, whether they share the same blood or not—if they are from the tribe where the sun rises, “ha bu Umunne m” (they are my siblings).

Allow me to introduce them to you:

Obinna – the trailblazer, the eldest who carries the weight of responsibility, caught between expectation and desire

Nneoma – the nurturer, balancing tradition and change.

Zara – the quiet force, observant and strong-willed.

Nzube – the bridge between worlds, determined to live life on his terms.

Diuto – the overlooked middle, finding identity in the in-between.

Ikenna – the only son in his branch, the one who must stand tall.

Adanna – the cherished only daughter, navigating love and duty.

Ugo – the solitary one, carving a path alone.

Somto – the last child, the free spirit with much to prove.

Through this series, their various positions in the family and how it shapes their decisions and helps them navigate life seamlessly or defectively will be explored.

I have an overactive imagination so if something interests me, I’ll write about it.
